What do you do when horses are your life, and you have to give them up?

For twenty-five years, everything I did revolved around horses.

A bad riding accident damaged my confidence and probably led to the second disaster:
too
much inside rein, a flipped carriage, and three months in bed. It was the end of my life
with
horses, but it wasn’t the end of my life.

Writing gave my life back. Writing about horses gave back my soul.

I wrote my first novel, Charley’s Horse, as if taking dictation from a voice in my head. Memories of horses flooded in, but without the pain. I remembered things I hadn’t thought of for decades, about riding lessons, horse care, what it felt like to love horses through the pages of a book. What it felt like to be afraid. Truly, the novel wrote itself. I just sat still and wrote down the words.

The second novel has been harder because I don’t yet know the story, but I write every
morning, still taking dictation from that comforting little voice, and the pages build up fast.
can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
